A historical Brooklyn brownstone located in Crown Heights needed an upgraded backyard and front yard that gave the owner maximal use of their outdoor garden.
Given the limited space, we segmented the yard into a series of smaller rooms to play with scale and accommodate programming. The edges and planting were simplified to create unity within the garden, allowing focal species to standout. Playing with scale, the plantings were located to accentuate the smaller rooms within the garden and reduce the perception of limitation. Narrow upright border plants feel like they belong while vertical ornamental trees are located in spaces where they can screen and provide shade but still feel appropriate to the garden scale.
